"I never thought I was smart enough to be a scientist. When I finally gained the courage, I started my pursuit of science thinking I'd only be an archaeologist. Then, after my first geology class, I decided to do both and become a geoarchaeologist!
However, before I began grad school, I realized how little other black scientists I knew. Black archaeologists and geologists are in low numbers, and doing both seems to add a double effect of imposter syndrome and isolation.
That's why I started B-SCI, a nonprofit for black and underrepresented scientists. We're still a young organization, but I hope more scientists join and encourage people who are intimidated by science, like I was, that anyone can be a scientist!"
