Marguerite Thomas Williams (1895-1991)
In 1942, Dr. Williams became the first African-American to earn a PhD in geology. Her dissertation, “A history of erosion in the Anacostia drainage basin,” studied sedimentation in the Anacostia River. Though she spent the rest of her career teaching, she was a trailblazer for Black scholars in earth science.
